Planned Giving to Tau Beta Pi

Planned gifts provide a way to serve and be remembered by future generations. Each gift, small or great, is a gift of lasting value because the engineering profession intrinsically directs the course of society, and Tau Beta Pi members help guide the course of engineering. Any gift which is transferred with the help of a professional is considered a planned gift. Planned gifts are a tax-wise way of giving and offer benefits to you, the donor, as well as to our organization. Members who have mentioned Tau Beta Pi in their wills automatically belong to The Heritage Society.
There are many ways to establish a tax-advantaged charitable giving program. The following list includes the more common ones. Charitable giving may be reduced to two broad categories: estate gifts and lifetime gifts.
- Estate Gifts: Wills Bequests (money, stocks, bonds, real estate or other assets)
- Lifetime Gifts: Cash, securities, real estate, life insurance
Download the complete Gifts of Lasting Value brochure. Consult your financial advisor (such as a lawyer, accountant, or life insurance agent) for the method that can best fulfill your intentions.
Several members of the Association have asked about the proper form of writing Tau Beta Pi into their wills. Tau Beta Pi is classified as an educational nonprofit corporation under Section 501(c)(3)(not private) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.
Sample language for including the association in estate plans:
"I give, devise, and bequeath to The Tau Beta Pi Association, Inc. (EIN #62-0479545), a corporation existing under and by virtue of a charter granted by the State of Tennessee and with its headquarters in the City of Knoxville, in said state $...(or, the following described property, or securities.)"
IRA Charitable Rollover Gifts
The SECURE Act, which was signed into law on 12/20/2019, raised the required minimum distribution (RMD) age to 72 from 70 1/2. This change applies to distributions required after 12/31/2019 with respect to individuals who turn 70 1/2 in 2020 and beyond.
Under the rollover provisions, qualified donors (previously age 70 1/2 or older) are able to contribute up to $100,000 (indexed annually) from an IRA account and avoid federal tax consequences. When the amount withdrawn from the IRA account is paid directly to the charity, it is not counted as federally taxable income. In addition, the IRA charitable gift amount counts against the donor's required minimum distribution (RMD). However, the gift may not be counted as a charitable deduction on federal tax returns.
This information on Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) should not be construed as tax or legal advice and is provided as a public service to highlight a matter of interest. It is not intended to constitute a full review of any subject matter. Please consult a tax professional, lawyer, or financial advisor for the method that can best fulfill your intentions. IRA custodians may send your gift to the Tau Beta Pi Association, P.O. Box 2697, Knoxville, TN 37901-2697. Our federal tax ID number is 62-0479545. Tau Beta Pi Heritage Society
The Heritage Society was established in 2001 to recognize and honor those who continue the tradition of outstanding support by remembering TBP in their plans. Heritage Society members, listed below, have included a provision in their estate plans to benefit the Association and have informed TBP of this commitment. Their support is gratefully acknowledged. Contact if you wish to be included as a member of the Heritage Society.
