Engineering Future Leaders
Engineering Future Leaders (EFL) — formerly Engineering Futures - is the professional development program of Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering Honor Society.
Since the 1980s, the program has provided professional skills training to help engineering students and practitioners develop non-technical skills essential for personal and professional success. The program grew from chapter officer training workshops developed and delivered by member volunteers, and expanded to serve college students when curriculum was donated by a professional skills training company.
In 2017, Tau Beta Pi joined the national CyberAmbassadors collaboration, which was funded by the National Science Foundation (Award #1730137) and developed new curriculum focused on Communications, Teamwork and Leadership skills. These materials are now the core of the EFL program, with trainings offered both online and in-person by trained volunteer facilitators.
As of Fall 2026, the program is operating under this new name on a three-year trial approved by the Executive Council. The content and structure of the program remain the same — the new name is intended to convey more clearly the program's purpose of enhancing the professional skills of engineering students and practitioners.
Looking to Volunteer?
The Engineering Future Leaders program is run entirely by volunteers, who help facilitate the core curriculum, organize EFL Online, and provide logistical support.
New volunteers are always welcome!
