Choosing Events to Run

When considering what events to run, we believe it's important to first determine at least a rough mission for your chapter. Consider the following:

  • What do your officers enjoy doing?
  • What is your city or region best known for? What opportunities are easily found in your community?
  • What has been successful for your chapter (or other, similar organizations in the area) in the past?

General Tips for Events

  • Interaction is key to successful activities! Make sure every event allows members to interact with each other.
  • Collaborate with local collegiate chapters, community organizations, and other professional societies to share resources and connections.
  • Try a variety of types, sizes, times, and locations of events so that there's something available for everyone.
  • There is no universal "best" frequency of events, but generally aim for something between monthly and quarterly for events. Try not to let the chapter disappear for more than a few months!

The above should give you an idea of general types of events that might work for your chapter. Isolate a few contenders for events based on those ideas, and offer those events to your members. Periodically request feedback directly or through surveys, and pivot and adjust to the most popular events. Revisit your mission as you find what seems to engage your members the best.

Ideas for Events

We've found that most alumni chapter events tend to focus on one of four areas: technical-, social-, community-, or student-focused. Here are some examples of each.
