Tau Beta Pi Awards $302,000 to 156 Scholars

The Fellowship Board of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society, announces the selection of 156 Tau Beta Pi Scholars from 377 applicants for undergraduate study during the 2011-12 academic year. Most winners will receive a cash award of $2,000 for his or her senior year of engineering study, and a few will receive $1,000 for one semester. All Tau Beta Pi Scholarships are awarded on the competitive criteria of high scholarship, campus leadership and service, and promise of future contributions to the engineering profession. All scholars are members of Tau Beta Pi.

Of the winners, 31 are studying mechanical engineering, 25 chemical engineering, 20 civil engineering, 14 electrical engineering, 12 biomedical engineering, seven bioengineering, seven computer engineering, six aerospace engineering, five computer science, three electrical engineering & mechanical engineering, two each are studying engineering physics, geological engineering, industrial engineering & mechanical engineering, and industrial & systems engineering. The others are studying various areas of engineering and combinations of engineering science.

All of this year's scholarships are named for members or corporations. The Nagel Scholarships are given in honor of former Secretary-Treasurer Emeritus Robert H. Nagel, P.E., NY D '39 . Named Editor of THE BENT in 1942, he became Secretary-Treasurer and Editor in 1947 and served until October 1982 when he was named Secretary-Treasurer Emeritus. Mr. Nagel died in 1997 at the age of 79.

The Record Scholarships, awarded for the first time in 2001, commemorate Leroy E. Record, KS A '29, whose generous bequest will provide earnings to support awards in perpetuity.

The Stabile Scholarships are named for Vincent A. Stabile, NY L '40, whose gifts to the Association, along with gifts from the Vincent A. Stabile Foundation, have permanently endowed scholarships.

The Dodson Scholarships are sponsored by Charles R. Dodson, MD B '30, who made a generous gift to the Association in 1998. Placed in the C.R. Dodson Scholarship/Fellowship Fund, its investment earnings will support the program in perpetuity. Mr. Dodson passed away in 2003 at the age of 96.

Ruth M. and Cleveland L. Campbell, P.E., IA A '47, made gifts to permanently endow the Campbell Scholarship . Elsa and Peter H. Soderberg, CT A '68, sponsor the Tau Beta Pi– Soderberg Scholarships, awarded for the thirteenth consecutive year.

The Scribner Scholarships are named for A. Clayton Scribner, NY G '29, whose bequest to the Association in 2003 permanently endows the awards. The Mentor Scholarship is given in admiration of the 1926-46 automobile industry by James P. Tarwater, MO B '51.

In 2005, Henry M. Alford, MS A '27, left a bequest to the Association sufficient to endow permanently the Alford Scholarship. The Spirit of Apollo Scholarship is given by a donor to honor the legacy of the U.S. NASA Apollo program.

The Anonymous Scholarship is named for a generous donor who made a gift in 2006 to fund 10 awards; and the Bose Foundation made a gift in 2011 to sponsor the fifth Bose Scholarship.

A 2007 bequest from the estate of Dr. Richard A. Curtis, OH A '64 , permanently endows the Curtis Scholarship. The Baker Scholarship is named for the 2010 Tau Beta Pi Distinguished Alumnus, Dr. Merl Baker, P.E., KY A '45.

The Kolff van Oosterwijk Scholarship is named for H.L.J. Kolff van Oosterwijk, CA A '50 , who left a bequest to Tau Beta Pi in 2008. The Forge Scholarship is named for Charles O. Forge, CA G '56 , who left a bequest to Tau Beta Pi in 2010. The Mitchell Scholarship is named for George P. Mitchell, TX D '40 , who made a special gift to the Association.

Corporations sponsor the remaining scholarships. Awarded for the fourth time, the GEICO Scholarships are sponsored by GEICO. The Lindeburg Scholarships are sponsored by Professional Publications, Inc., and named for its president, Michael R. Lindeburg, P.E.
