Hanley Bequest Boosts Fellowship Program

In February of 2007, the Association received a bequest of $135,000 from the estate of the Mary A. Hanley, widow of Tau Beta Pi member Edward P. Hanley, IL B ’42. A mechanical engineer, Mr. Hanley received his undergraduate degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology and was initiated into Tau Beta Pi in 1940 while working as a co-op at Goodman Manufacturing Co. in Chicago. As Tau Beta Pi Fellow No.84 in 1947-48, he earned an M.S. in refrigeration engineering at MIT.

In the early 1950’s Mr. Hanley moved to Denver, Colorado, establishing a kitchen remodeling company that thrived for more than 40 years. Grateful for assistance received as a Fellow, Mr. Hanley honored Tau Beta Pi in 1991 with a gift of $25,000 to be used for fellowships. At that time, this was the largest private, non-bequest gift received in the history of the Association. Three Hanley Fellows were named in 1991, 1992, and 1993.

Mr. Hanley had also created a trust that provided for Tau Beta Pi Fellowships. After his death in 1997, Mrs. Hanley respected the wishes of her husband by stipulating a bequest for fellowships in her trust. She died in 2004.

The Executive Council established the Edward and Mary A. Hanley Fellowship Fund in accordance with the provisions of the Mary Adeline Hanley Trust to further graduate study in engineering. Hanley Fellowships, currently worth $10,000, will be awarded in perpetuity.

Tau Beta Pi is fortunate not only to receive a gift of this magnitude from a loyal member, but also to be able to use it to support the education of talented and deserving engineering students. Because of the Hanleys and others who demonstrate their commitment to the future of engineering, Tau Beta Pi will continue to be able to assist more students than any other engineering society.

If you, like the Hanleys, have included Tau Beta Pi in your will, we thank you and would also like to honor you now as a member of the Heritage Society.
