Florida Alpha initiates Pat Galloway, first woman
president of the American Society of Civil Engineers, as an eminent engineer
On December 2, 2003, the Florida Alpha chapter at
the University of Florida had the pleasure of initiating Patricia D. Galloway,
P.E, as a member of Tau Beta Pi. Ms. Galloway is currently CEO of The
Nielsen-Wurster Group, Inc., Princeton, NJ. An internationally recognized
leader in civil engineering and construction, she became the first woman
to serve as president (2003-04) of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
During a previous visit to the University of Florida,
Ms. Galloway made the comment that she had “always wanted to be
a member of Tau Beta Pi, but never could coordinate joining.” Accordingly,
Florida Alpha was more than happy to make her dream a reality and arranged
for her induction into Tau Beta Pi as an eminent engineer.
As the honored speaker at the initiation banquet,
Ms. Galloway emphasized the role of engineers in society and how our standard
of living depends upon engineers. She inspired all present to take responsibility
for their community and use their status as an engineer to help improve
society.
Ms. Galloway received a BS degree in civil engineering
from Purdue University in 1978, and an MBA from the New York Institute
of Technology. In addition to receiving numerous awards and gaining certification
in several areas, Ms. Galloway’s career history includes roles as
corporate president and chief financial officer, arbitrator, expert court
witness, instructor, and guest professor. (more
