The Tau Beta Pi Association Scholarship
Program was established in 1998 with five awards named in honor of former
Secretary-Treasurer Emeritus R.H. Nagel. In six years, awards of $2,000
each have been made to 221 Scholars (identified at www.tbp.org) for
their senior year of full-time engineering study.
During 1998-99, the Society received gifts totaling $200,000 from Charles R. Dodson, MD B '30. Investment earnings from the Dodson Scholarship/Fellowship Fund support awards intended particularly for members of Maryland Beta. In 1999 a gift of $40,000 was made by Vincent A. Stabile, NY L '40, to endow a Stabile Scholarship in perpetuity.
During 2000-02, trust assets of $4,358,000 were given by L.E. Record, KS A '29, to endow Record Scholarships. In 2003 a bequest of $135,000 from A.C. Scribner, NY G '29, was used to endow Scribner Scholarships in perpetuity. Alabama Power Foundation, Inc., made a gift of $25,000 in 1995 to endow scholarships, the first of which was given in 2000.Seven awards named for Elsa and Peter
Soderberg, CT A '68, were given in 1999-2005.
Ruth M. and Cleveland L.
Campbell , IN A '47, have made gifts since 2001 for eight Campbell Scholarships.
Merck & Co., Inc., and Dr. Joseph J. Jacobs, NY R '37, sponsored awards
in 2001. Fluor has sponsored five awards since 2001. Awards named for
Dr. E.W. Beans, OH G '53, John Benard, MO B '34, and A.R. Orr, TX B '50,
were made in 2002, for E.M. Honig, TX B '70, C.J. Utt, IN A '50, and the
wife of H.A. Defries, NY G '50, in 2003, and for T.M. cott, OH B '49,
in 2004. Duke Energy and General Motors have sponsored awards since 2003.
The Mentor Scholarship is given in honor of "Te Ram Bi Ta Zo,"
who influenced J.P. Tarwater, MO B '51. Two awards were named for Albert
H. Winkler, AZ B '75, who left a bequest to TBP in 2004.
Since 1996 Tau Beta Pi has participated
in the scholarship program of the Society of Automotive Engineers--sponsoring
a total of 48 Tau Beta Pi Scholarships of $1,000 each to entering engineering
freshmen. During 1988-95, the Society awarded 24 Tau Beta Pi Scholarships
of $1,000 each to first-year engineering students in a National Society
of Professional Engineers program.
