The Executive Council met in Knoxville, TN, on June 8, 2007.
The Council enthusiastically voted a TBP Superior Service Award and a Resolution of Appreciation to retiring advisors of the collegiate chapters.
The selection of Dr. Thomas E. Wade, FL A ’67, as the 2007 National Outstanding Advisor was accepted. District 15 Director Scott E. Fable, Chair of the 2007 Laureate Committee, reported that his group had selected one Laureate from five nominees. The selection of Dr. Robert H. Foglesong, WV A ’68, as the 2007 TBP Distinguished Alumnus and the selection of Dr. Thomas C. Sheehan, P.E., NY M ’81, as the winner of the 2007 TBP-McDonald Mentoring Award were accepted.
Project grants under the Greater Interest in Government Program were given to the California Alpha and Iowa Alpha Chapters, and the local projects for which cash awards were made will be reported in a later issue of THE BENT.
The Council reviewed the status of a collegiate chapter in California that is considering a change from a 501(c)(7) organization to 501(c)(3) status. The situation of a chapter that placed itself on automatic probation for failure to obtain initiation approval for two initiations was reviewed, along with the situation of a chapter that could be placed on probation on August 1 for failure to hold an initiation during the year.
Re-appointed as Engineering Futures Facilitators for 2007-08 were: M.D. Czebatul, S.P. DeCabooter, P.W. Gleason, N.F. Gray, L.A. Matta, T.A. Perrino, R. Singhal, E.R. Whisler, and S.M. Willems; and for 2007-10: M.D. Burness, C. Chang, S.C. Dao, J.A. Huggins, I.H. Klestadt, F.A. Leon, J.R. Luchini, M.D. Lauer, J.M. Nolan, M.L. Peterson, and R.W. Pierce.
The Council re-appointed as District Directors for 2007-10: M.D. Malmstrom, C.G. Campbell, A.A. Ayoub, R.C. Huck, C.W. Caldwell, J.C. Hill, J.G. Dabling, R.W. Mead, J.E. Mitchell, and S.E. Fable. Christy M. Bogard, KY B ’04, was appointed as District 6 Director to a term ending June 30, 2010. The Council enthusiastically voted a Resolution of Appreciation to retiring District 1 Director Matthew C. Rodrigue, ME A ’04. Councillors reported on their attendance at and the well-received responses of participating alumni who visited District Spring Conferences.
Director of Fellowships D.S. Pierre Jr. reviewed the operations of the TBP Fellowship and Scholarship Programs.
Dr. Annette M. Brenner, OH K ’92, was re-appointed as Director of Engineering Futures, and Dr. Amy K. Forbes, PA B ’97, was re-appointed as AlumNet Coordinator for terms ending June 30, 2011.
The Council reviewed and modified plans for the 2007 Convention to be held in Dearborn, MI, on October 11-13. The Council appointed an ad hoc Convention Committee on Curriculum Review. A proposal to raise the Convention assessment from $5 to $7 was reviewed and will be sent to the Convention. The Council appointed a permanent Convention Chair and a Parliamentarian for the 2007 annual meeting. District 15 Director S.E. Fable was re-appointed as Chair of the Interactive Chapter Exchange Committee to a term ending June 30, 2010.
The Council modified the charter for the Advisor Recruitment and Development Committee.
Secretary Treasurer J.D. Froula reported on the status of the 2007 Alumnus Giving Program and information-technology improvements at Headquarters; his third-quarter financial report of the fiscal year had been sent to the Council and was accepted. The Council approved the 2008 budget and approved a plan for the year-end allocations to the trust funds.
Councillor Norman Pih reported on his participation in the meeting of the Trust Advisory Committee in New York City on May 29 with Mr. Froula. President L.A. Simonson reviewed the successful receptions for alumni in Naples, FL, on March 21 and in Washington, DC, on May 6, and he reported on the meeting of the TBP Financial Development Committee (FDC) in Vonore, TN, on May 19. Capers W. McDonald, NC G ’74, was appointed to the FDC for a term ending June 30, 2010.
Councillor Jonathan F.K. Earle reviewed the analysis and results of a survey of the collegiate chapters about the Tau Beta Pi National K-12 Math & Science Initiative, the need for measurable results, and the status of the schedule and plans for staffing the leadership committees.
The Council reviewed plans to update the TBP Chapter CD and plans to prepare a letter to deans of engineering thanking them for expediting lists of eligible engineering students to the chapters.
