The Executive Council met in Knoxville, TN, on December 7, 2002.

The Council’s first action was the election of its and the Association’s officers for the 2002-06 term: M.W. Ohland, President; E.D. Styles, Vice-President; and D.J. Tyner, Secretary of the Council.

The Council enthusiastically voted a TBP Superior Service Award and two Resolutions of Appreciation to three retiring advisors of the collegiate chapters.

Executive Director J.D. Froula reported on the status of the 2002 Alumni Giving Program; his first-quarter financial report of the fiscal year had been sent to the Council and was accepted. A bequest was received from the estate of Thomas M. Scott, OH B ’49, and one Scott Scholar will be named in 2003.

The Council endorsed the 6th World Congress on Engineering Education, to be held in Nashville, TN, in June 2003.

The Council reviewed the inspection report of the visit to a petitioning group at the University of California, Riverside; a re-inspection must be held before that petition may be presented to the Convention.

President M.W. Ohland was appointed as installing deputy for the March 1 installation of the Virginia Epsilon Chapter.

Dr. Carl E. Rathmann, CA N ’68, was appointed for a three-year term to the dean’s selection committee for the TBP National Outstanding Advisor Award; Dr. Pramod P. Khargonekar, FL A ’81, was named Chair for the 2003 program.

Program grants under the Greater Interest in Government Program were given to California Psi and Ohio Iota, and the local projects for which cash awards were made will be reported in a later issue of THE BENT.

The 2002 Convention held in October in Detroit, MI, was reviewed and was judged to have been successful. In compliance with the 1981 Convention procedure for site choices, the joint invitation of Utah Alpha/Beta/Gamma to host the 2005 meeting in Salt Lake City was accepted. The Council reviewed recommendations presented during the annual meeting and adjusted plans for the 2003 Convention to be held in Lubbock, TX, on October 23-25.

The schedule of Spring conferences was reviewed, and assignments were made for national-officer representation at all 16 events. Preliminary plans were made for the June 7 meeting of National Officials in Scottsdale, AZ.

District Directors E.L. Tezak, L.C. Pawlak, and B.L. Frost III were appointed to the TBP Distinguished Alumnus Selection Committee. District Directors D.A. Kamat, E.A. Stephan, and E.R. Phelps were appointed to the Laureate Selection Committee. R.F. Andre, FL D ’98, E.I., J.P. Blackford, DC G ’95, T. Chu, CA A ’98, P.E., and A.A. Irizarry-Rivera, PR A ’88, P.E., were appointed as Engineering Futures Facilitators to terms ending in June 2005. Lisa A. Rine, OH Z ’97, was appointed to the Engineering Futures Planning Committee for a term ending in June 2004. Conflict of interest updates were received from two national officers. S.E. Fable, CA T ’96, was appointed to the Interactive Chapter Exchange Committee for a term ending in June 2004; S.M. Botwinik, FL A ’95, and K.T. Luchini, MI A ’99, were appointed to that committee for terms ending in June 2003; S.C. Dao, FL A ’95, was appointed as chair of that committee for a term ending in June 2003.

The budget was reviewed, the quantity of TBP Scholars to be selected in 2003 was reduced to 36, and the contract with Newport Creative Communications for conduct of the 2003 Alumni Giving Program was reviewed and approved. Kruse & Associates, P.C., was appointed as 2002-03 auditor. Approval was given to obtain a cost estimate for minor revisions to the Headquarters offices. The Scholarship Development Campaign Committee was terminated, and the proposed charter for a new Financial Development Committee was reviewed and modified.

Robert F. Black, Dr. Lyle D. Feisel, IA A ’61, P.E., Samuel C. Florman, NY A ’44, P.E., and Catherine P. Rice, MD B ’83, P.E., were appointed to the TBP Editorial Board for terms ending in December 2003-05.

Director of Communications and Development P.M. McDaniel reviewed the status of a study of the effectiveness of TBP communication materials and practices and a proposal from GEICO to sponsor a Convention event. The Council held preliminary discussions on consideration of a national project.
