The $500,000 Lemelson-MIT prize is the world's largest single cash prize for invention. Dubbed the "Oscar for Inventors," this prestigious $500,000 award recognizes individuals who have a rich history of inventiveness and creativity, a proven commitment to inspiring others, and whose ingenuity and innovation have made our society stronger, safer and healthier. Members of Tau Beta Pi among the 11 inventors who have received this annual prize since 1995 are:

1997 Dr. Douglas C. Engelbart, Oregon Alpha '48
1998 Dr. Robert S. Langer, New York Delta '70
2004 Dr. Nick Holonyak Jr., Illinois Alpha '50

Lemelson-MIT Lifetime Achievement Award

In addition, the Lemelson-MIT lifetime achievement award recognizes outstanding individuals whose pioneering spirit and demonstrated inventiveness throughout their careers has improved our society and inspired others. Once honorary, the award now includes a $100,000 prize. Members of Tau Beta Pi among the 11 inventors who have received this annual award since 1995 are:
