Heinz Award

(Heinz Award homepage)
The Heinz awards were created to provide a message of inspiration to each and every one of us regarding the power of the individual in American society. Established by Teresa Heinz in 1993 to honor the memory of her late husband, U.S. Senator John Heinz, the awards celebrate the accomplishments and spirit of the senator by recognizing outstanding individuals in the areas of greatest importance to him.
The awards, administered by the Heinz Family Philanthropies, recognize outstanding individuals for their contributions in the five areas of arts and humanities, environment, human condition, public policy, and technology, the economy and employment. Nominations are submitted by an anonymous council of nominators and are reviewed by jurors appointed by the philanthropies. Award recipients, ultimately selected by the board of directors, receive a medallion and an unrestricted cash prize of $250,000. Tau Beta Pi recipients in the category of technology, the economy, and employment include:
1993 Dr. Andrew S. Grove, New York Eta '60 in recognition of his astounding technological and business accomplishments, and his equally remarkable determination and vision
1998 Dr. Mary Lowe Good, South Carolina Gamma '50 for her singular vision in working to build an economy fueled by scientific knowledge and technological know-how
2003 Dr. Robert S. Langer, New York Delta '70 for his pioneering work in the controlled release of anti-cancer drugs and for his work in biomaterials and tissue engineering
2005 Dr. Mildred S. Dresselhaus, South Carolina Gamma '51 for her efforts to expand scientific opportunities for women and her contributions in the fields of carbon science, which includes nanotechnology and thermoelectrics.
