Presidential Medal of Freedom

Nation's highest civilian honor award given to citizens who have enriched our nation through their achievements and service. It was established in 1963 and replaced the Medal of Freedom. Tau Beta Pi alumni among this group of 300 persons include:
1964 Clarence L. Johnson, Michigan Gamma '32 aeronautical engineer, aircraft designer, designed the U-2 aircraft
1964 Frederick R. Kappel, Minnesota Alpha '24 business leader, president of American Telephone and Telegraph Company

1987 John A. McCone, California Alpha '22 public servant, former director of Central Intelligence, under secretary of the Air Force
1988 David Packard, California Gamma '34 public servant, businessman, philanthropist, former deputy secretary of defense, chairman of the President's blue ribbon commission on defense management. of Puerto Rico, industrialist, patron of the arts
1991 Don Luis A. Ferre, Puerto Rico Alpha '24 public servant, former governor of Puerto Rico, industrialist, patron of the arts
2005 Dr. Robert E. Kahn, NY Eta '60 designed the software code that is used to transmit data over the Internet
